Make A Punk Tutu

Tutus aren't just for ballerinas anymore!

If you want a cute and fluffy tutu skirt with a punk edge, you can make one without having to sew a stitch. Making a punk tutu can be a fun and easy craft project for individuals with any level of sewing skill. Before you make your punk tutu, decide what colors you would like to use, and gather any punk embellishments you might want to add.

Instructions

1. Wrap elastic around your waist to measure. Mark with a safety pin. Sew, pin or hot glue the elastic so that it will fit comfortably around your waist. Cut off any excess elastic.

2. Tulle fabric is a fine, lightweight net fabric available from most craft and fabric stores.

Lay out the tulle on a flat surface, and cut into 2- to 3-inch strips. Tulle strips should be twice the length of your finished tutu skirt. To give the tutu a punk look, fray or taper the ends of your tulle strips.

3. Fold the tulle strips in half and place underneath the elastic band to form a loop and two loose ends.

4. Pull the loose ends of the tulle strip up over the elastic. Thread the loose ends of the tulle strip through the loop and pull tight to make a knot.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with additional strips of tulle, until you've covered the entire elastic band. To create a punk tutu, you can alternate colors for a striped look.

6. Cut fabric strips out of scrap fabric two inches shorter than the tulle strips. Stretch the elastic, then loop the fabric strips through the tulle, or knot the fabric around tulle strips to give the tutu a punk look. Punk fabrics can be anything from plaid, lace or fabric printed with hearts or skulls.

7. Add strips of ribbon, lace or other trim, using the folding and knotting method used in attaching the tulle strips.

8. Safety pins are a hallmark of punk fashion.

Embellish your punk tutu with safety pins, or attach sequins, rhinestones or metal studs to fabric, using hot glue.
